DECADENT DECADE MONDAY by Alice Gaines

I haven't been with Changeling since the very first, but I signed on right around Changeling's first anniversary.  It was a bit of a fairy tale happy ending that turned out to be a beginning.  It starts out sad, but bear with me...

My husband of twenty-five years died on December 29, 2004 after an illness of only six weeks.  He went from (apparently) okay to dead before I could hardly catch my breath.  And the day he died, his pension company and the Social Security Administration informed me that I was losing both sources of income.  Yoiks!

Until then, I'd been sort of casual about my writing schedule.  I'd meet my deadlines, but between contracts, I'd fool around with this and that.  I actually wrote a non-romance (fantasy) with no sex to see if I could.  Now I had to find money.  I sorted through all my unpublished stories to get them ready to submit.  I got recommendations on publishers from my friends.

One Saturday morning in February of 2005, I sent off a partial to Changeling Press.  I figured they'd find it on Monday morning.  Twenty-seven minutes later, my phone rang.  There was an editor with an offer to buy and publish my story.

The Siren's Challenge was published in April.  My happy ending!

The happy ending turned to be a beginning.  The Siren's Challenge became the first story in a series of three about Telesian women taking human men as mates.  But Changeling and I kept going from there.

I wrote my first werewolves for Changeling, and Angela Knight did this gorgeous cover.  Isn't the wolf amazing?
At some point, I decided that if wolves could shift into humans, motorcycles ought to be able to do it, too.  So my  heroes for the Mannhof series were the heroine's bikes as well as their lovers.

I wrote elves and demons.  I wrote a fairy who let herself into a guy's house through his cat door.  I wrote a little green man who visited Earth on a sex vacation...a sexation!  I wrote a statue with a huge...ahem...tool who came to life.  I wrote hell as a casino where the payoffs came in sex and everyone won and where Lucifer was an incredible hunk.  Any screwy thing that entered my mind could be a story at Changeling.

A writer's dream!

My latest (but not last) story is Love Goddess.  A woman from another dimension wants to unite humans in love, but she can't seem to manage without the help of her best frenemy.  What will I think of next?

Decadent Decade Monday with Megan Slayer

So it's been a decade of Changeling. How cool is that? A decade of great stories that are a little off beat, a little kinky and very cool.

I thought I'd share a little bit of my road to Changeling in this post. I'm proud to be a Changeling. Very proud. Here's how I got to be an almost four year veteran of Changeling Press.

In 2009, I'd gone to the Lori Foster Reader and Author Get Together. It wasn't my first time, but hey, it's one of those things you've got to do. Anyway, I'm looking over the used books for the book trade (anyone remember when the RAGT was small enough we could still HAVE a book trade?) and talking to Flash. Now you can't miss Flash. I mean...she's very tall and very Flash. She kept prodding me. You've got to write for Changeling. You've got to join the dark side. I was flattered. I'd read almost all of the Hot Flash holiday stories for the last three years at that point. I liked the publisher.

But I had this odd notion I wasn't good enough to write for Changeling. That's where the big dawgs of publishing were. So, I waited. Now that same weekend, Marteeka Karland was at the RAGT, too. She stood with me and my best friend and we chatted about books and Changeling. She also told me, in her very Teeka voice, "DOOD, You've GOT to write for Changeling." (If you've ever heard her talk, I've typed it exactly how she sounds.). Again, I thought, I'm not cool enough for Changeling. She gave me a print copy of two of her books--one of which I gave to my best friend because it had wolves in it and at the time, I wasn't in to wolf shifters (shocking, I know)--and prodded me a little more.

Fast forward two years. It's 2011 and RAGT time again. My best friend wasn't with me at the event and neither was Teeka. But Flash. Oh, yes. Flash was there. She hunted me down and said, you have decided to write for Changeling, right?

I nodded. Yes, I'd thought about it. I had a story started, in fact. But as I'm known for, I hadn't finished it. I was still trying to get my name going in the publishing world. I floated the idea by her a bit and when she grinned, I thought, okay. I can do this. I also started emailing Teeka. By this point, I'm sure she was ready to drive up to where I live and kick my butt for procrastinating. (You wouldn't have guessed I'm a procrastinator...no...not me.) I talked to her about my idea, which was almost done, and how to impress the folks at Changeling. I mean, I didn't want to send them garbage, but every little extra point helps.

Finally, I took the leap. This story I had was supposed to focus on two siblings. The first story would be the sister's story and the second would be the brothers. Sister's story came first because I wanted to be sure I could get IN to Changeling first and because well, the sister dictated her story was first. I didn't usually write M/F, so it was a bit of a shift. The brother's story, an M/M story would be next. That's as far as I'd thought through the series. Two books.

It took some time--I'm still not sure why, but it did--and someone at Changeling read my short story about a girl who has the ability to burst into flame and kill the man she's making love to if he's not her mate. Have you heard of that story? Fire Woman? Yeah, that one. Someone read it and loved it enough to contract it. M contacted me and asked if there were more stories in the hopper. I said, why actually there were. The brother would have his story next. After that, well, I wasn't sure. She replied, 'you know, a series, with each band member featured, would be a great way to continue the stories. I'm sure the others have tales to tell.'

Now either I'm a sucker, or I really liked the Glow band, but I did what she said. I let the rest of the band talk. The guitarist, the drummer and even the record company gave me characters who wanted their stories told.

Eventually I branched out and started a series with black cat shifters. I added a Razor's Edge series featuring challenges and the occasional M/M story with bondage, for fun. I've even tackled faery tales. Now more than twenty-five stories on, I'm glad I made the leap and submitted to Changeling. I hope you're glad I went there, too.

Here's to ten more years of stories, heat and fun! Happy Birthday Changeling!!

Here's a little bit about my latest Changeling release:

Cat Style (Stray Cats, bk 2) by Megan Slayer
BIN:  06761-02176
Word Count: 10K
Page Count: 37
Genres: Erotic Romance, Novella, Paranormal
Themes: Shapehifters, Magic

He’s got cat style, but does he have what it takes to win her heart?
Penelope went to the witch’s house to look at the cats, not bring one home. The moment she spotted the tiny fur baby with huge green eyes, she lost her heart. But Hildegard’s cats aren’t all they seem. One skeptical owner plus one affectionate shifter equals love cat-style -- but will love prevail over the evil threatening to kill her furry best friend?

And a Hot Excerpt!

“Meow.”
She knew that sound. “Fang! It’s Halloween. How in the name of God did you get out? I had you in the bedroom so you wouldn’t get loose.” She scooped the cat into her arms and flipped the switch to turn off the porch light. “You can be a real poop sometimes.” She nudged the door shut with her hip then engaged the lock. As per usual, the cat cuddled in her grasp and purred. She plunked him on the couch. “What am I going to do with you? Huh? I’ll get that bell I’ve threatened to put on you.”
Penelope sighed and closed her eyes. She rubbed her temple. As much as she loved the cat, he drove her crazy. “I should take you to the vet and have you fixed,” she grumbled. “That would teach you.”
“I suppose you could, but what fun is that?”
She opened her eyes. Instead of her black cat lounging on the couch, a dark-haired man with a hint of scruff on his cheeks and not a stitch of clothing on sat in his place.
“You’re not Fang.” Not her best response, but who in the hell was he? She balled her fists, ready to punch the intruder. “What did you do with my cat and how the hell did you get in?”
“Penn, it’s me, Fang. My mother called me Ascher, and I rather like it better.” He rose to his feet. “I don’t want to hurt you. I’d rather be back in your arms.”
Her brain misfired. A nude man, handsome at that, in her house and wanting to be in her arms? And he claimed to be her cat? She wobbled on her feet. The room went blurry, then black. When she opened her eyes, the man was crouching over her.
“Penn? Fuck.” His eyebrows crinkled and he smoothed her hair from her face. “I knew I should’ve told you yesterday but there wasn’t time.”
“You’re a strange man in my house.” She scrambled to an upright position. “Get the fuck out.” Where in the hell were her purse and her mace?
“Penn.”
“You don’t know me.” She inched away from him. Instead of coming after her, the naked man sat still. “Now get out.”
“I do so know you, Penelope.” He pinched the bridge of his nose between his index finger and thumb. “Wait.” He grabbed a pillow to cover his crotch, then sat on the floor. “I know. Piss-poor timing to hide my junk. I’m sorry.” He sighed. “When you went to Hildegard’s to get a kitten, you were handed me. You didn’t know you wanted me until you saw the fluff on my ears. You loved that I had those funny tufts of fur.”
“No.” She shook her head. “No, no.” The man knew too much about her cat. What a lunatic! She grabbed her purse and rummaged for the bottle of mace -- all without moving her attention from his face.
“You wondered why I hadn’t been nabbed yet.”
Shit. Those were just about her words exactly.
“Hildegard said I’d be exactly what you needed. I can be, but you have to believe me and trust me.” He finally moved toward her. “Please?”
“I’m supposed to believe a naked man in my house is my cat? Not on your life.” And yet, somewhere in her brain his story made sense.
“I’ll show you.”

When she's not writing the stories in her head, Megan Slayer can be found luxuriating in her hot tub with her two vampire Cabana boys, Luke and Jeremy. She has the tendency to run a tad too far with her muse, so she has to hide in the head of her alter ego, but the boys don't seem to mind.

When she’s not obsessing over her whip collection, she can be found picking up her kidlet from school. She enjoys writing in all genres, but writing about men in love suits her fancy best. The cabana boys are willing to serve, unless she needs them. She always need them. So be nice to Javier or he will bite--on command.

She also masquerades under the name Wendi Zwaduk.

Decadent Decade Monday - Interview with Shelby Morgen

This year, 2014, Changeling Press celebrates a decade of publishing.  I’m B.J. McCall and today, I’m interviewing author and publisher Shelby Morgen about her Decadent Decade at Changeling.

BJ: Shelby, welcome to the Changeling Blog.  You were a writer first then decided to start your own online publishing house. What motivated you to become a publisher?
Shelby: Sheer insanity. Plus, you know, I’m a control freak. I felt – and still feel – there’s a real market for Speculative Fiction in the women’s erotica market. I wanted to support the genres that are harder to find, women’s erotic paranormal, urban fantasy, and dark fantasy, as well as edgier contemporary stuff, and m/m. At the time M/M was really new to the romance scene, and a hard sell at other houses. We strongly endorsed the development of these markets, and have enjoyed the growth and acceptance of all of these genres and themes over the years.

BJ: It’s been ten years. What was the most exciting moment you can recall?
Shelby: The new books. I love my job. I’m like a kid in a candy shop. Every week I can’t wait to read the new releases – and I get to read them before they release!

BJ: What is your finest achievement as a publisher?
Shelby: Seeing writers we’ve taken a chance on as new talent grow and develop both their art and their craft. Through the years we’ve had many authors move on to bigger houses, and I love to hear them say “I got my start at Changeling.” Then, too, a lot of those authors still come back to Changeling whenever they have time – or a story that just doesn’t fit the large market mold.

BJ: If a time warp occurred and it was 2004, would you do it again?
Shelby: Again. And again. And again.

BJ: You’ve written many books. I’m sure you love all your stories, but which book is the story of your heart?
Shelby: The Northlanders. Still. Every once in a while, I’ll pick that series up to reread them, which I can do now almost as a stranger reading someone else’s books. Or possibly Redemption. Or maybe… Hmm. Changeling? I still love my Changeling and her beer guy. Though I have to tell you, the most fun series I’ve done would have to be Memphis Heat with Marteeka Karland. Never tried team writing before. Was a real blast! She and I did a Spaceport book together, too. Dangerous Obsession. Oh! Spaceport! The very first Spaceport. Or maybe the second one, with the drunken Katali singing Karaoki. That might be… Oh wait! I forgot about the Dire Wolves! And…

BJ: I understand you have a new book coming out.
Shelby: I have a WIP – Work in Progress – no definite release date yet. Working title is Three Glasses of Wine. It’s looking promising. If I can just manage to find time to get it finished!

What could possibly make a blind date worse? Being stood up. But Stella’s got a rescuer -- tall, dark and handsome just happens to be a were. Were what she’s not quite sure, but her gift of Paranormal Second Sight’s seeing… antlers? Might be time for another glass of wine…

And since that’s more than my editor knows about it at the moment… Wait. You’re trying to get me in trouble, aren’t you!

BJ: Thank you for taking the time for this interview.  And on a personal note, I want to take this opportunity to thank you for publishing my work since 2005. It’s been great.
Shelby: Thanks so much for having me, BJ. You rock, as always!

Shelby’s books are available

Interview with Autumn Elkridge from Falling for Fall by Sara Jay

What kind of job do you have?
The best kind! I’m a detective with the St. Louis Paranormal Investigation Unit, so I’m not your average cop. I handle monsters, faeries, curses, that kind of thing. My partner Theo is a forest god, so he also keeps things interesting.

Describe yourself in three words.
Tough, sensible and athletic.

Who is your love interest?
Oh, Theo. It’s nice to have a partner who’s also a friend with benefits, but I could never be too serious with a fickle forest god. He’s got adoring nymphs around him all the time, so you know I could never compete.

List three things about Theo that turn you on.
Theo is the forest. He smells like it and when he’s turned on, he even looks like it. It’s so incredibly hot. His hair is russet and messy, like he’s always playing in the leaves. He’s also a big charmer with a mind that’s always in the gutter. I like to act like that annoys me, but really it makes me blush in a very good way.

Whipped cream or Marshmallow?
Whipped cream! Theo makes coffee miraculously appear during our stakeouts and sometimes he adds it for something special.

What is the craziest place you and Theo have made love?
We’ve been in some crazy positions for sure. The most recent crazy place was in the middle of traffic on a highway!

Are you a night person or a morning person?
I love the night, but I can be ready to go at any time. That goes for work or play!

What's your favorite food?
You mean besides coffee? I love pumpkin anything, especially scones.

What's one thing about Theo that pisses you off?
He acts like he wants to be serious, but the man has to be crazy. He could never be serious, especially with a human—right?

You and Theo are stranded overnight in a cabin. What would you do to pass the time?
We’d bonk like bunnies. Not gonna lie. He’d probably spray me with cold water while I’m in the shower, though. He did that the last time we tried to have a getaway!

Would you share the blurb from your story?
Sure!

Battling for Autumn’s life may just convince her Theo’s serious about her becoming his mate.

Tough-as-nails paranormal investigator Autumn Elkridge has her dream career and all the booty calls a woman could want from the sexy Green Man of the forest, Theo. They make perfect partners at work and in bed, but it’s in Theo’s nature to stray, not stay.

Theo wants more from their relationship. A grisly case forces her to see him in a new way. Can Autumn admit she’s falling for fall?

Tasty Tuesday: Easy Meatball Sauce

At a recent party, we added a quick sauce to our meatballs and people just ate them up! It's so fast and easy. All you need is your favorite meatball recipe (or your favorite store-bought meatballs if you like the semi-homemade approach) and the following two ingredients:

1 can crushed pineapple
1 bottle barbecue sauce

Choose a sauce flavor that melds well with your meatballs. Mine were plain so we used sweet honey barbecue sauce. Just mix the two together and heat them up, then cook your meatballs in the sauce. They are delicious! Serve them hot, of course.

I just love little hacks like these that change plain recipes into something special. What are your favorite simple recipe tweaks?
