My eyes adjusted to the dim interior as I entered the building where all new slaves were kept. I'd never been inside before, as I'd never purchased a slave -- until now.
I had thought of taking a slave for a while, especially after getting to know Susan, my cousin's slave. But I'd been dragging my feet over it. I already owned a unit in the slave quarters, the one where Susan had stayed, and had had it redecorated. Now it was time to actually select a slave of my own.
It wasn't that I didn't enjoy the harems, but there was something more intimate about owning your own slave. I wanted the opportunity to get to know the woman I was with, and as I hadn't thought of taking a wife, I hoped to find someone close to my age, someone who could possibly become more than just a slave at some point in the future. My cousin had come to love his slave, as had several of my friends, and I had to admit that I wanted that for myself.
Rheul had told me about a slave a few days ago. A quiet young woman in the holding cells, purchased and returned for unknown reasons. He didn't know her name, or really anything about her other than what she looked like, but it seemed important to him that she be saved. I'd promised I would take a look at her before I made my selection.
As I entered the holding cells, I nodded to the guards. I studied the occupants of each cell until I spotted a woman matching the description Rheul had given me. She looked like she would barely reach my shoulder, and her honey blonde hair hung halfway down her back.
I stepped into the cell and stood before her. Gently, I reached out and lifted her chin, forcing her to look me in the eye. When her eyes met mine, the brilliant green of them astounded me. The stark terror in her face was nearly my undoing. I had no idea what she'd experienced since being on Vaaden, but it had obviously been bad.
She flinched when I reached to take her hand, but I kept my touch gentle as I grasped it and tugged her closer. With her body a mere inch from mine, I reached out and stroked her hair. She was trembling from what I assumed was fear, and I wished I could take it away.
I nodded to the guard. "I'll take this one."
The guard looked at her. "Is this acceptable, or would you prefer the harems?"
"I'll go with him," she whispered. Her voice was soft and musical, delicate like she was.
Lifting her into my arms, I carried her out of the holding cells and into the light of day. The brightness of the double suns of Vaaden was brutal to someone not of my planet, and she hid her face against my neck.
"It isn't far," I told her.
"I've been there once before," she reminded me.
"Why did your owner return you?"
"I didn't please him," she whispered.
After we entered the slave quarters, I should have set her down and let her walk, but I found that I liked carrying her. Her weight was slight, and it had been a while since I'd felt feminine curves pressed against me -- not including my brief visits to the harems. I went there for a service and nothing more. Being with a slave was going to be more intimate, even more intimate than having a wife.
Not that I had one of those offending creatures. Vaaden wives were horrible things, cruel and vicious, cold and heartless. Not something I planned to inflict upon myself any time soon.
When we reached the apartment Sylon had given me, I put her down and opened the door. She hesitantly stepped inside, and I followed her, making sure the door closed behind us. I watched as she took in her surroundings, trying to see it through her eyes.
I knew it was a simple apartment compared to some of them, but I'd had it redecorated and hoped she liked it. The floor was plush like the fur of Earth rabbits we'd seen on previous raids and was a dark lavender color. The walls were pale lavender, nearly white. The chairs were a soft aqua and lavender print, with a small round table in front of them. I'd made sure there was a bookshelf installed and had filled it to capacity. There were card games and games of chance to keep her occupied when I wasn't around.
She moved toward the bedroom, which had the same color scheme as the main living space. Her fingers trailed across the bed. When she faced the closet, she hesitantly placed her hand over the door and opened it. Inside were several slave garments, but I'd made sure they were the best, all of them made of silk and a little longer than the one she currently wore. I wanted her to be as comfortable as possible in her new home.
"I don't even know your name," I said softly, not wanting to scare her.
"Lyssa."
"Would you like to shower and change into one of your new tunics, Lyssa?"
She reverently touched one of them and nodded.
I walked up behind her and placed a hand on her shoulder. She tensed under my touch.
"Easy, I won't hurt you."
I took down a pink tunic and handed it to her. "Do you know how to work the showers?"
She shook her head. "My other owner always did it for me."
Slowly, I took her hand and led her into the bathroom. I showed her how to operate the shower and the gel dispenser and made sure she knew where the towels were stored. I could tell she was scared, but she had to get used to me some time or other, so I figured it might as well be now. Baby steps, but this would be the first one.
"I'm not going to hurt you," I assured her as I reached for the hem of her slave garb. Little by little, I raised it, exposing more and more of her body. She was tinier than I had thought, but sweetly curved. It was the bruise on her ribs that infuriated me.
Tossing the offensive garment on the floor, I reached out and softly caressed the black and blue skin. "Who did this to you?"
"My previous owner."
"Once you're clean, I'm taking you to the physician. I want to make sure this bruise is the only damage he caused." I lifted her face so that she would look at me. "What was your owner's name?"
She shook her head, refusing to answer me.
"He deserves to be punished. Tell me who he was."
"No, please... it's all right."
I growled in frustration, but left it alone. Turning on the shower, I nudged her under the water. I quickly stripped out of my clothes and joined her. If she was surprised, she didn't show it. She actually seemed amazingly calm considering her previous abuse. I had expected her to cower against the wall, especially after her aversion to my touch.
I washed her hair and soaped her skin. It turned me on immensely, but I wanted to make sure she was all right before we did anything. I would visit the harems prior to taking her if she wasn't ready yet.
But it seemed my new slave had other ideas. She pressed herself against me and stroked my cock. Grinding my teeth, I eased her hand away from me. I wanted her, but something told me she wasn't really into it. I wanted her to want me before we were intimate. "Lyssa, what are you doing?"
"Isn't this why you joined me in the shower?"
I caressed her cheek. "No. I just wanted to wash you and spend time with you."
She seemed confused. "But I thought... don't you have to... My previous owner said if I didn't take care of him, he'd die."
I nodded. "That can happen, but for me it takes a few days. I went to the harems last night, so there's no rush."
She looked so small and so young... I knew our warriors never took women under nineteen years of age, but this one looked like she barely made the cut-off. It suddenly made me feel rather old at thirty.
"How old are you?" I couldn't help asking.
"Twenty. Does that matter?"
I shook my head, but I found it humorous that when I finally purchased a slave I ended up with one ten years younger than myself. She seemed sweet, even if she did appear a little intimidated by me at times, but I doubted I would ever have the type of relationship I wanted with her. There was too much of an age difference between us, as if there wasn't a big enough obstacle with us being from different worlds. At least I knew she would be safe. I had promised Rheul that I would get her out of the holding cells if she was still there, and I had honored my promise.
But I had to admit I was a little disappointed. I had wanted a more mature woman, someone I could possibly share my life with. I didn't see that happening with Lyssa.
I turned off the water, and we dried off and dressed. In fascination, I watched her braid her hair. I'd never watched a woman get ready before, and I found I liked the intimacy of it. Now that I knew she wore her hair other than hanging down her back, I would have to procure hair combs and such for her. I wanted to give her everything I could that might make her happy. She'd been through enough already according to Rheul, and I wanted to make sure she was happy. Everything but her freedom, for that was one thing I wouldn't be able to give her.

Recipe: Brown Sugar Berry Cobbler

Also known as what I made for desert tonight. =)

Unlike most cobbler recipes I've made before, this one is diverse in using different berries -- whatever you like -- and it uses brown sugar.

INGREDIENTS:

3/4 to 1 cup plus 1 teaspoon packed dark brown sugar, divided (depends on how sweet berries are)
2 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
2 3/4 pounds mixed berries (strawberries should be trimmed and halved if used)
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
Rounded 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces
3/4 cup whole milk
1 teaspoon sugar

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 425°F with rack in middle. Butter a 13-by-9-by-2-inch glass or ceramic baking dish (3-quart).

Stir together 3/4 to 1 cup brown sugar and cornstarch in a large bowl. Add berries and toss to coat. Transfer mixture to baking dish and bake until just bubbling, 10 to 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add butter and blend with your fingertips or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal with some roughly pea-size lumps of butter. Add milk and stir until the dough just comes together.

Remove baking dish from oven and drop 12 mounds of dough onto hot berries, spacing them evenly apart. Mix together remaining teaspoon brown sugar and granulated sugar and sprinkle all over dough. Bake the cobbler until topping is golden and feather-light, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool until warm, about 30 minutes.

Serves 6. Enjoy!

Thank you!

"This is Big D saying goodnight to all my night owls. Keep it tuned to WKXY 900 for your two-hour block of music starting with a British Invasion. Beatles through Sex Pistols just for you."
Drake Banners hit the switch for the digital mix he'd put together that would run until the morning crew showed up at five a.m. and turned off his mic. He stood and stretched, started walking out the kinks of being stuck in the cramped quarters of the DJ booth.
It was quiet as he made his way to the break room to pick up his jacket and helmet. It was one of the things he liked about working this shift -- by about 9 p.m. he was on his own for the rest of the night. He grabbed his stuff and headed out into the night. It was a nice one, the air still warm from the day's sun, even now.
He bypassed his bike, making sure it was where he'd left it, and headed down the block to the Raven and Lamb pub for a quiet drink.
The club was quiet, mostly empty, the bartender raising one hand in greeting. "D! You want Jack and Coke?"
"You know I do." He grinned and sat down at the end of the bar, pulling a twenty out of his wallet.
Lacey brought the drink over, grinned at him. "Good show tonight, man. I enjoyed it."
"Thanks, Lacey." He traded her the twenty for the drink. "Keep the change."
"You're a doll-baby." She leaned over the bar, kissed his cheek, gave him a look at that cleavage.
"Don't let it get around." He gave her a wink and enjoyed the view.
The bar door opened, and Lacey stopped, stared. "Wow. New blood."
He looked. Wow was right. Two lithe blonds -- one a lean, pointed-chin man, the other a buxom, curvy woman, both emanating pure sex. His prick jerked in admiration, and Drake had to bite back a groan, his attraction immediate.
Forget it, he told himself. They were so obviously together a blind man could have seen it.
They settled, two stools down, the woman closest to him. God, they smelled... so good.
He wanted to push them up against the wall and take their mouths, one and then the other.
Shit, he needed to get laid.
Lacey bounced over, eyes on the guy, ignoring the woman altogether. "What can I get you?"
"White wine for me, Guinness for him."
The woman had a lovely voice. Husky and sweet, it settled right in Drake's belly. He wondered what she sounded like in the throes of orgasm. He wondered what the man sounded like, too.
Drake shook his head and took a big swig of his drink. He had to get it together; he didn't usually go off like this on total strangers. Although it did happen, now and again. His cock wasn't helping with the "get it together" plan. Every movement the man and woman made went right to his balls.
He waved Lacey over. "I need another. Make it a double."
"Put it on my bill, please." The lady looked over at him, smiled. "I'm Lindsay."
He nodded. "Thanks. Drake."
"This is Tony." She gave him a smile, slow and sensual, sexual as fuck.
He returned the smile, his cock harder than fucking nails. "Nice to meet you both." He made sure to include Tony in that.
She held out one hand to shake, the motion languid and lazy.
Fuck. He barely trusted himself to reach out and only shake her hand. He managed it, though, his hand going out, engulfing hers.
"Mmm..." A jolt of pure, unadulterated electricity shot up along his arm. He moved over so he was sitting next to her.
Lacey finally brought over his drink and he muttered out a, "Thanks," eyes still on the intriguing Lindsay.
Her hair was long, sleek, curling over her shoulders, over her breasts. The man with her was equally as blond, his pointed chin making Drake want to lick it.
Drake licked his own lips. He didn't know what was the matter with him; he wanted them both. Which was crazy -- it looked like they were together, so why did he get the feeling they were cruising him?
He shook his head and had some of his drink.
"So, is there a good place to get a nice, rare steak around here, man?" The guy -- Tony -- asked.
"Sure. Not at three in the morning, though."
Tony's voice was deeper than Lindsay's, but it still poured through Drake and pooled in his gut.
"I've got a pretty mean hand with the grill, though." Of course if Drake had these two back at his place, steak would be the last thing on his mind.
"Yeah? There's a twenty-four hour grocery store close by, I saw it."
"I have steak in the fridge." He wasn't one of those fru-fru vegetarian types. He liked his meat. "And steak sauce." Was he really inviting both of them back to his place?
Lindsay sipped her wine, beautiful green eyes meeting his. "I have enough for all three of us," he added, just to be sure they were on the same page; that he was reading the situation correctly.
"You definitely have enough for the two of us." God, listen to that man growl.
It was that growl that tipped him. If he didn't get out of here soon, he was going to take them both right over the bar. "Then let's go."

Round wooden tables dotted the room but the space was dominated by a spectacular bar. Shelf upon shelf of bottles rose in majesty behind the hustling bartender. The bar itself was made of gleaming wood and surrounded by tall stools with low backs. Off to the right, a despondent demon sat facing a beer; a giant shifter of some sort watched him suspiciously. No doubt the oversize chrome dome was the resident bouncer.
Various patrons scattered through the bar, some drinking in solitude, others clustered together in small, chatty groups. A woman caught his eye. She was dark skinned and mysterious, and gave off the vibe of a talented human rather than a paranormal. She had an array of cards before her, studying them carefully. She sat in profile to him, her head bowed. For a moment, he thought he knew her.
Laughter spread through the room, distracting him from the human. Off at the end of the bar, a dreadlocked beach bunny spun in circles on her stool, first one direction, and then the other. He narrowed his eyes. If he wasn't mistaken, she had no business being here at all. Her humanity radiated from her tanned skin. Not a whisper of talent shimmered in her aura. She whooped, losing her balance, and the stool teetered precariously.
"Coco, you're gonna fall!" The bartender looked more amused than annoyed. But then it was difficult to be annoyed when a tiny blonde bombshell was happily wasting her afternoon putting on a show for hungry -- and horny -- clientele. More than one avaricious gaze was locked on her curvy body.
She seemed pretty ordinary to Antonio, who regretfully ruled her out of his search. He chose a spot at the bar where he was unlikely to be overheard and dropped a bill on the gleaming wood.
"What'll it be?" The bartender was decent enough to look at: fit, handsome and clueless. Another human. Antonio bit back a smile. The economic crash had resulted in some unusual changes in Miami real estate.
"Rum and cola. And information." He pushed the photograph forward, his PI credentials on top of it. The guy seemed pretty straight up, like he was former law enforcement or something. He wiped his hands and peered at the photo, frowning. He picked up the ID and compared the photo to Antonio, then looked at the photo of the woman.
"She's familiar. What's this, a skip trace?"
"No, missing person. I'm doing the case as a favor to her brother. He lives overseas and hasn't heard from his little sister for a while." It didn't hurt to play the family card. If the guy knew anything, he might hold back if he thought someone meant her harm. Sure enough, the bartender gave Antonio the once over.
"South American?"
"Brazilian by birth, American by citizenship." Antonio smiled blandly. He nodded at the photo. "Look again. Maybe she's been in here?" He briefly wondered what would happen if he cued the bartender off to the fact that his bar was filled with characters from his nightmares. The chaos would be fun, but more in the style of Jedidiah, or even Jasper. Antonio had a bit more class.
"Wheeeee!"
The girl spun and Antonio gazed at her appreciatively. She was tanned and buff, wearing knee-length board shorts, a bikini top, and mismatched flip-flops. She'd probably dropped a little too much acid at some point. She giggled, grabbed her drink, knocking it back in one gulp, then slipped down onto the stool, lying back, her dreads nearly touching the floor.
"Sam! Refill!" She dug into a pocket and waved a crumpled bill in the air. Even from where he sat, Antonio caught the smell of fish and seawater on the filthy paper. It looked like she'd gotten lucky.
"Just a minute, darlin'!" He glanced up at Antonio and winked. "Coco's on soda and lime. I don't think she has a clue she's not wasted!" He pushed the photo back. "You know, she's got a look, but I can't place it. Any distinguishing marks? Tattoos, that sort of thing?"
Antonio opened the file and scanned Jasper's notes. Nothing, not even a scar or pierced ears. He frowned over the basic profile. Under eye color, Jasper had noted, Two. A joke? But then, Jasper himself had one eye that was a whirl of blue and amber. He pulled a pen from his pocket and made a question mark next to the description. They looked perfectly normal in the picture.
"What makes you think she might be around here?" Sam the bartender turned away, busying himself with wiping down the bar. "She's local?"
"Yeah, from Lauderdale, and this is the sort of place she might be drawn to if she's here in Miami."
"A sports bar?" Sam looked skeptical.
"Sports bar! Sports bar!" Sam hunched his shoulders at the loud squawking of a parrot a few feet away. "Shut up, Polly!"
The big bouncer growled.
The parrot began flapping its wings and howling like a dog. Antonio raised a single brow. Maybe the bird knew something.
"Hush!" Sam shouted.
The parrot squawked once again, and the girl slid off the stool, landing on the floor with a crash.
"I'm all right!" She rose to her knees, pushing away the helping hands of the enormous bouncer. "Floor came to meet me little too fast." She pushed back a matted clump of hair, giving the room a beaming smile.
Antonio shivered. She was gorgeous. Not the perfect, polished beauty of Miami and its hordes of models and trophy companions, but a gleaming, beaming ray of sun. Little glass beads studded strands of her hair. Her wide smile displayed straight, white teeth; there was a tiny gap right there in the middle. Her honey-colored skin was bare of make-up, her eyes -- the one he could see was as blue as the ocean. Before he could see the rest of her face, she untangled a crooked pair of sunglasses from her mop of hair and perched them on her straight little nose.
She stood unsteadily, bracing on the back of the stool for balance. Clearly, she was looped out of her brain and Antonio shot a look at Sam, who simply shrugged. She smelled only of sunshine, citrus and herself. There wasn't a tinge of alcohol on her.
Something else then.
"I'm outta here. Later, gaters!" She wiggled her fingers, tripped over her own flip-flop and caught herself on Antonio's arm. She squeezed it, fingers probing his bicep.
"Nice." She looked up at him. "Model?"
"Not anymore," he admitted. Not many people would get that much of an admission from him. Modeling hadn't been the most brilliant part of his history.
"Pretty man. Big. Fae or shifter?"
Oh. Shit. He looked at Sam, who'd returned to his sink and was rinsing glasses. He grinned at Antonio, shook his head and slowly circled a finger at his temple, indicating that little Coco wasn't quite right in the head. Antonio then caught the ominous gaze of the bouncer. He gave nothing away. Antonio swallowed. The big man was bruin -- a bear shifter. Poor Sam had no clue.
"I'm a Siberian," he whispered in her ear. She went perfectly still. Her glasses hid her eyes, so he couldn't see her expression.
"Really?"
He nodded. He stood perfectly still while she looked him over from head to toe.
"Liar." She grinned at him. Even though the smile was forced, the most kissable dimple flirted with him. To his surprise, his cock responded. He looked at those full, plush lips and had the most insane urge to kiss the little human. She was close enough he could feel the heat from her body, and again she swayed toward him, clearly off balance.
He caught her before she staggered, grinning as she looked down at where her belly pressed into his groin.
"Oh my!"
"Oh yes." He grinned. He wondered if the place had a store room, or even a private toilet stall. Normally a dreadlocked surfer chick was far from what attracted him, but right now, attraction was a mild description of what he was feeling. He grinned wickedly, reaching up to slide her glasses off. She took a step back, bumping into a stool. Antonio leaned forward, tilting his head slightly, just a breath away from a kiss.
Her pink tongue darted out, moistening her lips. "Water. Need water."
"Water?"
She nodded. Her hair tumbled over one side of her face and she giggled, a throaty, sexy sound.
"I can do that." He straightened and turned to the bar. "Water for the lady."
Sam leaned a bit to look around him, grinned and reached under the counter, bringing up an icy bottle. "On the house." His blue eyes twinkled and he returned to his chores, chuckling quietly. The file still lay on the bar, so Antonio tucked the photo back into his jacket and fished out a business card, leaving it for Sam. He grabbed the slim file. He'd pretty well memorized all it contained, but still, it wouldn't be a good idea to lose it. Jedidiah -- and the entire paranormal community -- would have his head.
He shrugged and turned, and then froze. She was gone. The front door hadn't been opened and there was no sign of her anywhere. He looked around and spotted a dark corridor. An exit sign glowed at the end of the hall and Antonio tossed the bottle up into the air, deftly catching it as he began his pursuit.
He had a bottle of water for the lady.

Adara raced over the dense forest floor, trying to escape the shadow closing on her heels. Fear pumped adrenaline through her body as she ran toward her village through the darkness. Panic tangled with the sheer need to survive. If only I'd listened. What was I thinking, coming out alone?
She shot a glance over her shoulder. Her foot smacked against a tree root in the moment of distraction, pitching her body forward. The fall came in slow motion.
Cursing under her breath, she rolled onto her back. Dry leaves clung to her blonde hair. The subtle, musty scent of slow rot rose from the rich soil, mixed with something coming from behind her. The dark shadow loomed. Her gaze rose to take in her pursuer, wondering if the beast would be her doom.
The tall, broad-shouldered creature towered over her. Watching. It wasn't human or animal. The village wise woman had warned her of beings like this, but they'd seemed like fables. How could something so fantastical be real?
Even as she trembled with fear, this creature captivated her. The black and orange stripes covering his shoulders and arms evoked a distant memory, yet the design was uncommon in the Amazon.
His hair hung in straight, black strands like a human's, but his face had the nose, mouth, and eyes of a feline. His muscular, naked body reflected a splendid combination of both species. Sweat-shiny skin glistened through the inch-long fur that covered him. His white chest intrigued her, all the way to the patch of fur barely covering his groin. Leaves and branches framed his face with a lush green background. He crouched over her. His piercing golden eyes focused solely on her. His stare reminded her of a cat from her village staring at a small rodent before pouncing.
As he leaned down, she grabbed her kris from the garter on her thigh and pushed it against his stomach. She didn't want today to be the day she died. Her people needed her. She wouldn't let this beast deny them their princess.
The animal cocked his head at her. He brushed his lips over her throat, whiskers tickling her chin.
Her body stiffened. What is he doing? Bewilderment spread through her as his feline lips touched her neck. Instead of biting her, his canines grazed lightly, gently, from just below her ear down to her shoulder, almost as if exploring her flesh, instead of seeking to rip open her throat.
She tensed. Even with her weapon pressed against the beast's stomach, she still feared for her life. As an Amazon princess, she wasn't easily scared. But this feline made her heart pound. If only she had brought Rubia with her. She wouldn't be in this situation and could've stood a better chance against this feline.
Why does he persist in toying with me? Adara swallowed as a low burn started in the pit of her stomach. These feelings confused her.
A soft sniffing sounded in her ear right before his tongue scraped rough caresses on her skin. Other jungle cats marked their territory. Did this animal believe she was his? She didn't want to find out.
Without waiting for the feline's next move, Adara drove the kris deep into his stomach, meeting resistance as it plunged through flesh and muscle. She forced it further as his blood flowed onto her hands, making the hilt of the kris slick, weakening her grip.
He roared and leapt back with her kris still embedded in his abdomen.
She scrambled to her feet. His scream so near the side of her face made her ear ring. Bringing up a hand to her ear, Adara felt a trail of his wet blood drip along her cheek.
He straightened his spine and strode back to her, her kris still buried in him. It seemed as if it were nothing more than a minor annoyance to him. She clenched her hands into fists and dropped them to her sides.
The reality of what she saw struck her. She froze. How could he act so unaffected? He shouldn't have been able to move around so casually. It wasn't possible. How can I outrun something like that? This can't be happening. Her mother had always warned her to be careful when traveling through the forest. Why hadn't she listened? And how could she feel so drawn to this animal when he intimidated her?
"Who are you?" Gritting her teeth, she forced her voice to resonate with the commanding tones of an Amazon huntress, and fervently hoped it didn't betray the panic racing through her veins. Her people's beliefs restricted them from showing fear in front of strangers. Not that they saw many. But her tribeswomen were survivors in dangerous times. Their history brimmed with reminders.
The feline bared pointed white teeth. "Call me Rei." His husky voice reverberated like a deep growl.
He launched into the air and, before she could react, flattened her to the ground. Air whooshed out of her lungs. Her eyes widened and locked onto his.
He pinned her arms next to her head and pressed his feline lips to hers. His tongue scraped across her lower lip, causing nips of pain to cut through the alluring sensation.
She shook her head hard, breaking the kiss. Her breath rushed out short and quick. Never before had she kissed anyone. His mouth on hers created fiery stirrings within her body that felt almost too good. Her racing pulse only spread the warmth throughout her body that much faster.
Twice a year, her tribeswomen associated with Indian men. The younger girls were forced to stay in a hut during those visits, although Adara had snuck out once with Rubia in a fit of rebellion. She'd spotted one of her kin pressing her mouth against an Indian male's. Could this be what happens?
But men weren't to be trusted. Her kin had learned that the hard way many, many years ago.
Her mind flashed to the tales she'd heard from the wise woman. Horrible reminders assaulted her, memories of the men from long ago, enslaving her kind, killing them ruthlessly with diseases and swords.
She could imagine the cruelty of the conquering, pillaging men as vividly as if she had been there herself, so strongly had the wise woman spoken. It had taken weeks for her to sleep soundly after listening to that story.
Sudden panic swept away the lust that burned inside her. This creature could do the same. He's chased me, after all.
"What do you want from me?" Adara asked, trying to sound forceful, but instead her voice came out husky. She cleared her throat and returned his gaze.
Talking with an animal! Rubia would be jealous. Her tribeswomen would never believe this story... if she survived the encounter.
Rei smiled, warmth emanating from him. "You." His chest rumbled, and he rolled the word off his tongue like an exotic purr.

Katie's got her eye on tall, dark, and hunky, wrapped in black leather and jeans.
Problem. He's so sinfully sexy, she can't get a word out in his presence. Not to mention the fact that he looks like he's barely legal, at best. She needs to get him out of her system.
Michael's got other ideas. He's set his sights on improving Katie's theory of the Big Bang -- in more ways than one.

Go for it.
No, no, no. Not going to happen.
Come on, Katie. You can do this.
Absolutely not.
Oh my God. He looks even better without the jacket. Look at that body. And why do you think he's holding the jacket there?
Katie tore her gaze away from the cowboy holding the jacket, firmly deciding not to speculate on what all that black leather might or might not be hiding. "Thank you. I hope you enjoy the book."
Katie picked at the book cover, trying to contain her agitation. This was her third book signing in as many months, and the third time this cowboy had lined up for her autograph. That couldn't be a coincidence. Could it?
Stop staring at his crotch.
She averted her eyes, knowing she was blushing furiously. She looked down at the book in her hands -- her latest release, Cosmic Theory and The Big Bang -- and forced herself to quit thumbing the edge of the flyleaf.
I'd like to show him a big bang.
Oh, that was just wrong. She worked hard at not giggling. Physicists did not giggle. Not at book signings. And not because a handsome stranger stood in her line. Especially not when that sinfully sexy leather clad stranger'd shown up twice before -- for the same book -- and she'd still not been able to get a single word out of her stupid mouth.
You can do this! Come on, Katie. He's next up. Say something. Anything! Speak!
She looked up into the most gorgeous set of blue-green eyes she'd ever seen -- where were his sunglasses? -- and, once again, froze.
"Michael," he supplied.
What? Why was he telling her his name? Oh, so she could sign the book. Flustered, she reached for her pen -- why had she set it down? -- and knocked into her water glass. "Shit!" Katie clapped a hand over her mouth.
"Whoops!" Michael grabbed the glass -- and the pitcher -- just in time.
Michael -- she'd already known his name -- she never forgot names -- had the grace to laugh, just loud enough to cover her indiscretion. Hastily flipping the book open to the title page, she wrote For Michael -- you're a lifesaver! Dr. Catherine Vargen. "Thank you," she managed out loud.
There. She'd done it. She'd actually spoken to him. On some crazy inspiration, she pulled out one of her promo cards. "I'm giving a lecture at the planetarium tonight," she offered.
"What are you doing afterward?"
She blinked, twice, looking, she knew, like an insane owl. "Excuse me?"
"Q & A? Group discussion?"
"Oh." Yes, of course that's what he'd meant. Idiot. "Yes, I'll be fielding questions after the lecture."
"Great. I'll be there."
"Thank you!" she repeated lamely as he headed for the register.
Giving her a great view of tight jeans over a really fine looking ass.
Idiot, idiot, idiot. Quit looking! Jail bait. You'll get yourself arrested!
He couldn't be that young, could he? No. College student. Had to be at least twenty-one or twenty-two, maybe. Still. Twenty years her junior. Wrong. Just plain wrong.
Yeah, well, all she'd done so far was look. Couldn't arrest her for that. Not while he had his clothes on, anyway.

Sicily stared at her phone in disbelief, not believing the number displayed on the caller ID.
Ryver.
She hadn't heard from Ryver in over a week. That was a big deal for Sicily because of the reports of vampires breaking free of their docility charms and then massacring their human masters. Ryver had purchased a vampire, despite Sicily's efforts to talk her best friend out of the purchase.
Sicily had never liked the idea of owning a vampire. It was too much like playing with matches while living in a house soaked with gasoline. She didn't care how safe the mages proclaimed the vampires to be once under the control of the docility charm. Some part of Sicily had always felt the charms would fail. Her worst fears had come true, and her first worry had been Ryver, who had staunchly refused to return her vampire. Only the promise of a daily phone call to assure Ryver's continued health had kept Sicily from dragging the vampire back to the mages herself.
Then one day, Ryver didn't call. Sicily could only keep her paranoia at bay twenty-four hours before she was on the phone with the cops. No trace of Ryver could be found, not even foul play. The cops said she had merely left and forgot to call. After a week of Sicily's incessant phone calls, the cops elevated Ryver's case to a missing person. Ryver was a vampire owner, so the cops and mages assumed she was dead and her body stuffed in an unmarked grave between here and the vampire territories.
Sicily refused to believe that. She couldn't believe that. Ryver had to be alive. The fact that her number was appearing on Sicily's cell proved it.
Sicily pushed the talk button. "Ryver?"
"Sissy!"
"Oh, God, Ryver. It's good to hear from you." Sicily felt happy tears spring to her eyes. Ryver was alive. Nothing else mattered except for that.
"I'm sorry, Sissy. I'm sorry. I should have called sooner and let you know I'm safe."
"Safe where? Where are you?"
There was a pause so long that Sicily thought the call had dropped. She pulled the phone from her ear and looked at the call status. It was still connected. "Ryver, are you still there?"
"I'm here. I'm with Theron in vampire territory."
All of Sicily's happy feelings stopped. She asked in a deadpan voice, "What?"
"Don't worry. I'm safe."
If Ryver had been standing in front of her, Sicily would have shaken the woman until some sense fell out. "Ryver, are you crazy? How can you think you're safe?" Sicily didn't mean to yell, but that was the only volume that would come out of her mouth.
"I am. Theron is with me."
"So what?"
"Sissy, there's something I didn't tell you before." Ryver sighed into the phone. "When the charms started failing, Theron's did too."
"I knew it. I knew it." Being right didn't make Sicily feel better. "What did he do to you?"
Again there was a long silence. Ryver made a surprised squeak before Sicily could think the call might have cut off. Sicily couldn't interpret the sound or guess what had caused it. "Ryver?"
"Anyway, I'm safe with Theron. I need your help, though."
"You want me to call the cops?" Sicily already had her hand on her landline phone. She had the detective assigned to Ryver's case on speed dial.
"No. Nothing like that. I need some way to remove Theron's charm."
The urge to shake Ryver returned. Sicily settled on squeezing the phone. "Why in the hell would you want to remove the docility charm? If it's still working, make him bring you home."
Sicily would have said more but the sudden appearance of five robe-clad men in her living room gave her pause. She looked at each of the men in turn. She tried to ask them what they were doing in her house but no sound left her lips. Several attempts ended with similar results.
The men's sudden appearance, and her inability to make any sound to alert Ryver or anyone else of this intrusion, panicked Sicily. She tried to scream. That didn't work, so she stopped after the first few seconds of nothing.
On the phone, Ryver said in a rush, "Sissy, I know this is all weird to you, and you probably don't believe me, but I'm perfectly safe with Theron. I want to set him free. I was hoping you could help. Didn't you say you dated a mage back in college?"
Sicily tried to tell Ryver that she had more pressing problems than Theron and his stupid docility charm. When her mouth still refused to make sound, she tried to end the call. Sicily thought Ryver was crazy for willingly consorting with a vampire -- and Sicily still had doubts about the willing part -- but Sicily wouldn't let the mages get her. Her fingers refused to move, which meant she couldn't push the end button or toss away the phone.
Ryver asked, "Sissy?"
Sicily found her mouth moving of its own accord. "I'm still here. Yes, I dated a mage in college, but I haven't talked to him since we broke up."
Those weren't her words. Sicily couldn't stop the words from being spoken or say more to warn Ryver that Sicily wasn't the one talking.
"Oh."
"I am friends with another mage, however. You're in luck, since he happens to be a vampire sympathizer."
"You never mentioned him before."
"You never mentioned your vampire was loose." Sicily wanted to snort at that flippant response. It was something she would actually say, and might have said if she had control of her mouth.
Ryver gave a dry laugh. "That's true."
"I'll give him a call, ask him about the charm and then call you back. Okay? You're going to stay by the phone, right?"
"Yes. I'll be right here. Thanks, Sissy."
"No problem. Bye." Sicily pushed the end button, again moving against her will.
Obviously the mages surrounding her were the culprits. She glared at the man standing directly in front of her.
He nodded to her and said, "I am Mage Lord Quincy. These other fellows are my associates. Your mention of removing the docility charm alerted us to you."
Sicily had heard rumors that the mages monitored the phones. Now she had proof. If she lived past this encounter, she would blast the Internet with the news.
Quincy said, "Your friend has been led astray by vampiric suggestion. We can help her."
"How?" Sicily gasped in surprise at being able to talk again. "I can talk."
One of the other mages said, "We had to command your voice and body for a short time. It was necessary to keep you from alerting your friend to our presence. The puppet spell is now ended."
Sicily snapped, "You shouldn't have done it at all."
Quincy said, "That is in the past. We plan to help your friend by rescuing her from the vampires." He twirled his hand, making a round jewel appear on his palm, and held it out to her. "This is what your friend requires to remove the docility charm. Once it is removed, it will transport you and your friend back here."
She didn't want to take it. No one had ever accused Sicily of being naÔve or gullible. She didn't believe for a second that these five mages had entered her house without permission, after spying on her conversation, just to help out Ryver and her vampire.
She stepped back while shaking her head. "Not going to happen."

I gave the manacle on my right arm a restless tug, and it responded with a musical rattle. I couldn't see a damn thing. A blindfold bit into my temples, wrapping me in sensual, intimate darkness.
The lack of vision only made me more aware of him -- his scent, that faint tang of spice and masculinity, the heat of his big body standing just to the left of the bunk he'd chained me to, the slight rasp of his breathing. I have always been acutely aware of Prince Arles of Tor, once my intended, now my captor.
The bed dipped under his weight as he sat down beside me. I quivered like an animal, imagining his nudity. The way he'd looked that night ten years before was branded on my memory. Arles's broad back had flexed as he'd used the light whip, the perfect, tanned hemispheres of his bare ass working in concert with the leap of thigh muscles and the snap of brawny arms.
The girl had squirmed and sighed every time he hit her. Even as young as I'd been a decade ago, I'd known she loved it. The smell of sex hung in the air like some kind of musky, exotic spice.
"That's what he'll do to you," my sister had whispered as we watched from the secret chamber. "And he'll make you want it. Mother will be appalled."
Our mother might have known Arles dominated other women, but it would never occur to her that one of her daughters would feel the need to submit.
We, after all, had been born to rule.
"Never," I'd snarled, with all the melodrama of the seventeen-year-old I'd been. I couldn't drag my eyes away from the prince's feral strength. "I will not shame my blood." I could feel myself going wet.
"You will. He'll weave his alien magic, and you'll bow that proud little head."
I feared Isa was right. Even if I hadn't been in love with him, Arles was too much for me. I'd end up sacrificing everything I was to his dominance and raw male power. My mother would turn from me in disgust and revulsion. I couldn't bear the thought of her disappointment.
But I also knew my mother would force me to abide by the demands of the treaty. Saying no at the altar was not an option.
Two hours later, I slipped from the palace, abandoning my world, my family, and my life. The Capital Spaceport was only a few blocks away, and I meant to seek passage off world. I was too well known to take a flitter taxi -- any capital cabbie knew my curfew and would refuse to pick me up, for fear of the Royal Guard's wrath -- so I decided to walk.
A block from my goal, I was attacked by a pack of throat slitters who dragged me into an alley. I survived only because a passing mercenary heard my screams and charged to the rescue. He killed every one of the slitters and flew me to his ship for treatment of some ugly injuries.
Captain Galon Teve had a merc's hard eyes, but his heart was soft. When I told him my story, the big, gray-haired cyborg took pity on me and hired me on as crew.
My new mentor taught me how to fight, how to kill, and how to pleasure. Yet no matter how I tried, I could never love Galon as he came to love me. My heart was already captive to a boy with a Paladin's eyes -- and a man with a devil's smile.
Under Galon's tutelage, I discovered a talent for tactics and strategy. Eventually I became his second-in-command. When Galon fell in battle against the Fafnar, I succeeded him as captain of the Valkyrie Quest.
Through it all, Arles haunted my shamed fantasies. I'd lie in my lonely bunk with one hand stroking between my thighs, remembering the shadows rolling across his big body in time to the snap of his whip.
Now it was no dream.
Arles touched my nipple, brushing calloused fingertips over the hard nubbin. Just once, but I still caught my breath at the liquid heat that rushed through me.
"Sensitive little breasts." His voice rumbled in the intimate darkness of my blindfold. "I wonder how you'll taste. Shall I find out?"
Saliva flooded my mouth, and I swallowed. I didn't answer.
"I asked you a question." His fingers closed over my flesh in a pinch carefully calibrated to give more pleasure than pain. Yet the potential sting floated just beneath the delight like a dark promise. "I want an answer. Shall I taste you?"
"You'll do as you please. You always do."
"True." He twisted, released, flicked the nipple back and forth, sending warm delight lapping along my nerves. "But a show of submission on your part might appease me."
"I rather doubt it."
"But can you afford to take the chance?" Another hot pinch, this one with a hint of sting. Perversely, I felt heat flood my belly. "My reputation is not exaggerated."
"I never thought it was."
"Perhaps a silk flogger." He brushed his hand over the sensitive flesh of my left breast, gave me a caressing squeeze. "Right across these pretty tits. I would enjoy watching you dance."
"I've heard that of you." I tried for a tone of mild contempt, but my voice sounded too high, too breathless. I silently cursed myself. I could usually act more skillfully for my enemies.
Unfortunately, I'd never seen Arles as a foe. Even now, bound and naked, I remembered the thoughtful boy who'd first taught me strategy over endless games of Conquest. The prince was even more skilled now, a conqueror of two worlds who'd driven the Fafnar from Torrean space with his ruthless, brilliant tactics. When Arles tracked me down three days ago, I'd known I was in trouble.
I wasn't really surprised, though. I'd known the prince would demand a reckoning one day; my actions had done too much damage to his reputation. Anybody who watched the news vids knew that.
I'd also known winning a fight with him wasn't likely. Arles commanded a huge, Starbreaker-class warship that was the pride of the Torrean fleet. Bristling with blaze cannons and thermal torpedoes, the Mjˆlnir outgunned the Valkyrie three to one. Naming that ship after Thor's Hammer had been entirely too apt.
But though the Valkyrie was small, she was fast and nimble. She proved it as the Mjˆlnir chased us for three days through the thickest asteroid field I could find. Arles caught us just as we prepared to escape into superlight space. A salvo of thermal torpedoes blew Valkyrie's quantum engines, leaving us dead in space.
The prince demanded my surrender as the price of my crew's lives. I didn't want my people to pay for my sins, so I'd agreed. Leaving the Valkyrie in the hands of my executive officer, I flew to meet Arles in my personal launch.
When I stepped off the small craft's ramp onto the Mjˆlnir's squadron deck, I found him holding a collar and a set of magnetic slave bands equipped with chains. The golden restraints were engraved with erotic images and studded with emeralds for maximum barbaric glitter. He'd chained and collared me as his grinning crew watched. I could only grind my teeth in rage, trying to ignore the heat in my cunt.
Now Arles traced one finger down my torso, dipped suggestively into my navel, and paused at the neatly trimmed edge of my bush. I managed not to squirm. "I have a suspicion you're wet," he said, his voice dark and low. "Are you? Do I arouse you, Gisel?" He laughed. "Odin knows you've made me hard and hot."
His fingers dipped between my spread thighs. Both of us groaned at the slick, tight flesh he found.
"Ripe," Arles murmured. "Ripe as a peachango. Ready for my cock. Is that what you want, Gisel?"

Felina loved their room. It was spacious yet cozy with a fireplace, thick carpeting and a little balcony overlooking the beach. As with the rest of the inn, she'd put much thought into decorating it. The heavy drapes that kept out the daylight were of a deep pink material and matched the handmade comforter on the oversized bed. The big bed had been Falken's idea and a necessity with his preference for very active lovemaking.
Felina stepped into the adjoining bathroom. After turning on the water in the large marble tub, she undressed and stood naked in front of the full-length, brass-rimmed mirror. She briefly admired her tall, curvy body then began brushing her long brown hair.
"Hey," Falken called, tapping on the door. "Mind if I share your bath?"
"Please do," she called.
He stepped in and growled softly, seductively. Slipping his arms around her, he kissed her ear and said, "You look gorgeous."
Felina smiled and placed her hands over his, tilting her head to the side and allowing him to more easily kiss and lick her neck.
"So do you," she said, guiding one of his hands down to her pubic mound. His fingers stroked through her thatch of hair and gently fondled her soft folds of flesh. "I've always had a thing for sea wolves."
He chuckled and used his sharp canine teeth to gently scrape her shoulder. "Glad to know I still turn you on now that the great Vampire Lover has graced us with his presence."
"Falken!" She reached up and teasingly slapped his face. "You know you've always turned me on. And you can't decide if you like Pax or not."
"Let's not talk about Pax," he growled, turned her in his arms and pulled her so close her breasts flattened against his chest. One of his hands cupped her bottom and squeezed. "There are more important things to do at the moment."
She looked up at him with her most seductive expression. "Such as?"
"This." Falken swept her into his arms, carried her to the tub and placed her in the water.
He quickly shed his clothes and joined her in the bath.
Falken sat with his back against the side of the tub and pulled her into his arms. He growled softly and felt his canine teeth elongate even more as he called upon his wolf nature. Felina also growled, the soft, sexual sound sending a rush of desire through him. His cock stirred and he nuzzled her shoulder and neck, scraping his teeth along her flesh. His skin tingled as his wolfish pelt sprang out. Felina also summoned her inner wolf. A glossy black coat covered her curvaceous body.
Cupping her breasts, Falken squeezed them and brushed his thumbs over the stiff, dark nipples that poked through her wolfish coat. They were covered in soft flesh and he used the hairless pads on his fingertips to pinch and stroke them. The very tips of his extended claws gently teased the sensitive buds and she gasped with pleasure. Falken knew exactly how she loved to be touched.
One of his hands caressed between her breasts and trailed down her stomach to cup her pubic mound. His heated palm massaged her, stirring her desire. When he dipped his fingers inside her, she was hot, slick and so ready for him.
Yet Falken didn't seem in the mood to hurry. He nipped her earlobe and licked her neck and shoulder with his velvety tongue. It felt wonderful, yet she also knew how good that tongue felt on other parts of her.
As if sensing what she wanted, Falken grasped her waist and repositioned her so that she straddled him in the water.
"Falken," she murmured, looping her arms around his neck and gazing into his eyes -- the eyes of a man she had known and loved all her life. She and Falken were and would always be part of each other. They knew each other better than anyone.
Since changing to their wolf forms, their faces had elongated slightly. She brushed her nose against his and kissed him, their teeth clicking and tongues stroking.
Her pelvis pressed against his stiff cock and she rocked against him, loving the sensation of their bodies rubbing against each other. Falken groaned and grasped handfuls of her hair, holding her face close to his as his tongue explored her mouth thoroughly, as if they were new to each other rather than old lovers.
She had expected their lust to fade over the years, but they still pleased each other as much as when they'd first met, perhaps more. Back then they had still been learning about one another. Now each knew exactly how the other liked to be touched, kissed, sucked and nipped.
While they feasted on each other with passionate kisses, Felina reached down and began stroking his cock beneath the warm water. He swelled even more in her grasp and she knew by the raggedness of his breathing that he was nearing the edge. She was also aroused almost beyond endurance. In the midst of pleasure she thought how interesting it would be to have Pax with them at this moment, maybe fucking her -- or Falken -- from behind.
The mental picture of Pax on his knees to Falken, sucking his cock, nearly sent her over the edge.
She quickly rose onto her knees and guided the tip of his cock to her pussy. Their gazes locked and her heart pounded at the lustful expression in his amber eyes. Slowly she lowered herself onto him.
Falken grasped her waist, his claws lightly scraping through her pelt. His hands slid around to her ass. He squeezed and stroked it, his finger running lightly along the indentation of her buttocks.
Filled with his thick, hard cock, Felina rocked upon him. Taking his face in her hands, she kissed him, thrusting her tongue into his mouth, its rhythm matching that of her greedily pumping hips.
Growls and groans of lust rumbled in his chest and she mewled in reply, her hands clutching his shoulders and stroking the steely muscles of his back.
As their passion grew, Falken's hips jerked upward. Water from the tub slapped against their straining bodies and she heard some of it drip onto the floor, but she didn't care. All that mattered at the moment was the wonderful orgasm that was about to overtake her.
