Tasty Tuesday - Elizabeth Jewell's Halloween Blood Shots for Vampires

Every good vampire wants a decent blood shot for breakfast. Or lunch, or dinner. Or a snack, when the munchies hit. Here are some recipes for high-quality blood shots you can serve your favorite vampire any time of the year.

Ruby Wednesday
Fill a shot glass about 2/3 full with a good vodka
Dribble blood* slowly into the vodka for that lovely layered effect.

Virgin’s Kiss
Vanilla rum
Blood
Again, dribble the blood slowly for a layered look. Vampires like that.

The Harlot
Replace the rum/vodka with pomegranate liqueur. Garnish with lime.

Velvet Dick
Layer butterscotch schnapps and Irish crème and top with blood. (This is basically a Slippery Nipple with blood substituted for Grenadine.)

Bring one of these out for your next vampire party, or that new vampire you’ve decided to date, and see how the evening turns out.

*I used cherry-flavored candy blood from my local Halloween store. It’s overly sweet and sort of artificial-tasting, but not awful. You might do yourself a favor by using Grenadine instead, although it doesn’t have the same rich, red blood color as the fake blood.

Tasty Tuesday - Pat's Tasty Rasin Cake

Before I got married, I wasn't much of a cook, but I loved to eat. I am also a picky eater. So I asked friends and relatives to write down for me the recipes of things they prepared that I liked so I could learn to prepare them. It's something I still do. Here's a favorite called Tasty Rasin Cake:
RAISIN CAKE
1 cup of raisins
2/3/cup hot coffee
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Pour into bowl and let stand.

In another bowl cream until well blended
2/3 cup Crisco
2 eggs
1 cup sugar

In a separate bowl sift together
1 and 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Combine egg mixture with flour, stir, then stir in raisins and coffee mixture.
When mixed well, pour into a square pan and bake at 350 degrees until it tests done. (App. 30 minutes)

No icing is necessary, but if company was coming we made a glaze by thinning out confectioners sugar with a little milk then we poured it over the hot cake.

Why demon hunters?

Hey, y'all!

Sorry I've been out of touch for so long. My dad was really ill, and it seems like years now, but it's only been two weeks since he passed. I'm so glad to be able to get my @#$% together and get back to some writing and fun stuff!

Anyway, lots of folks have asked me about my Keeping Score series, wanting to know why I like to write demon hunters. I have an answer for that, and it has nothing to do with trends or big 6 publishers or even that I really like being able to explore different kinds of demons.

It goes back to gaming when I was just out of college. We were running an unnamed vamp type game, and all of the characters were so godlike that as the game master, I scrapped it and told my players they were now human vampire hunters in the middle ages.

Oh my gosh it was fun!

The hunters were so much more interesting because they were just these ordinary folks in extraordinary situations. I could relate to them so much better than vampires and demons, because they were given only the same weapons I could use.

That's the idea behind Keeping Score, my series about demon hunters. Book one and two are up now, and book three will come out in November. Check them out!

Tasty Tuesday - Easy Spiderweb Cheesecake by Anne Kane

Actually, I don't cook. That's what I keep the Cabana Boys around for, but I still have to collect the recipes. BTW - ever wonder whether a Cabana Boy wears an apron while cooking? I think I'll let you keep wondering :) Now I'd better go take a picture of the finished product so I can post it in here, and so I can eat it! Yummy!

Easy Spider Web Cheesecake

Ingredients:

1 pkg unflavored gelatin (about 24 ox)

¼-cup cold water

2 – 8 ounce pkgs of cream cheese – (I use low fat)

½-cup sugar

½ cup whipping cream (makes up for the low fat cheese!)

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 9 inch chocolate graham wafer crumb crust

2 squares semisweet bakers chocolate or ¼ cup chocolate chips

1 table spoon butter or margarine

In a small saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over the water and let stand for a minute, then heat and stir until dissolved. Remove from stove and cool slightly. In a medium mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Gradually beat in the cream, vanilla and gelatin until smooth. Pour into crust.

Melt the chocolate and butter in the microwave, and stir until smooth. Put in a Ziploc bag and cut a small hole in one corner. Pipe a circle of chocolate about an inch wide int he centre of the cake. Then pipe increasingly large circles around it about half an inch apart until you have six or seven circles. Take a toothpick and draw it through the circles from the centre to the outer edge. Wipe it clean, and repeat until you have a web pattern on the top. Cover and refrigerate for several hours, or until firm.

Tasty Tuesday - Roasted Chicken

I'm a sucker for chicken. Love it, love it, love it. I grew up BBQing it on a charcoal grill with my dad, and that will always been my favorite method. However, I finally came up with a recipe for the perfect oven-roasted chicken. It's always a huge hit in my house, and my oldest frequently requests it. Enjoy!

Oven-Roasted Chicken

Ingredients:
chicken leg quarters (I usually do 4, but it really depends on pan size)
olive oil cooking spray (for the pan/dish)
Nature's Seasonings
thyme
rosemary
olive oil (for brushing)
Directions:
Spray pan with the olive oil spray to avoid sticking. Preheat oven to 450. Then switch to broil.
Pat chicken dry (this ensures a crispy skin) and brush both sides with olive oil. Place skin side up, sprinkle with rosemary, Nature's Seasonings, and thyme. Broil for 1 1/4 hours, check temp before removing.

Tasty Tuesday - Pat's Seashell Dinner

1 Box Sea Shell Pasta
1 Stick Butter
1 Bag Frozen Chopped Onions
1 & 1/2 Pounds Ground Chuck
1 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Pepper
1 Pound Can Tomatoes
2 Cans Tomato Soup
1/4 Cup Burgundy Wine
1 Pound Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Optional Large Can Mushrooms -- Drain Off Liquid

Saute the meat and onions. When the meat is brown and onions soft, pour off grease. Sprinkle in the salt and pepper. Add the can of tomatoes and mushrooms if using them. Add the wine and a handful of the cheese to mixture and stir. Simmer for twenty minutes.

Cook sea shells according to package directions except take them out when they are aldente because they will be in the oven for an hour.

Set oven temperature to 350 degrees

Put the stick of butter in the bottom of 13” x 9” pan. Add cooked noodles. Stir until butter melts. Add the two cans of tomato soup. Stir well again. When the meat mixture is ready, pour it carefully over the noodle mixture stirring to combine. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the top and place in pre-heated oven for one hour.

To stretch it for our hungry hoard, we always served a salad and garlic bread with it. This will double for pot luck suppers or you can cut it in half. Use any red wine you like to drink, I’ve even made it with sangria. ( the kids noticed) it was a little sweeter than usual but everyone ate it there were no leftovers.
